Starlink Installation Tips for Business Use

Created by Trevor S, Modified on Fri, 16 May at 3:41 PM by Trevor S

Starlink provides fast, low-latency internet in locations where traditional broadband struggles — making it an excellent solution for rural offices, backup internet, or mobile setups. If you're using Starlink Gen 3 (the latest model with built-in Ethernet), installation is simpler and more flexible for business use.

Here’s how to get the most out of your Starlink setup.

1. Choose a Clear, Elevated Location

The Starlink dish (known as “Dishy”) needs a clear view of the sky to maintain strong connectivity. Avoid mounting near:

  • Trees or foliage

  • Buildings or chimneys

  • Satellite dishes or tall structures

Use the Starlink app’s “Obstruction Check” tool to scan the sky for potential interference before installation.

2. Secure Mounting is Essential

For business-grade reliability, mount the dish securely using:

  • Roof, pole, or wall mounts — depending on your building type

  • Weatherproof fittings and fixings for outdoor durability

  • Proper alignment and balance — especially in exposed, windy areas

Avoid placing the dish at ground level unless absolutely necessary, and only in unobstructed open spaces.

3. Protect the Cable Route

The included cable should be routed safely and cleanly:

  • Use UV-resistant cable clips or conduit to protect from weather and damage

  • Avoid pinching or bending the cable too tightly

  • If drilling through walls, seal all entry points properly to prevent moisture or pests

4. Ensure Stable Power Supply

The Gen 3 Starlink requires continuous power to stay online. For stability:

  • Use a dedicated socket, ideally with a UPS or surge protector

  • Avoid running from extension leads where possible

  • In remote setups, consider weather-sealed external sockets or IP-rated enclosures

5. Integrate with Your Business Network via Built-in Ethernet

With Gen 3, Ethernet is built in — so no need for a separate adapter.

You can:

  • Connect directly to your existing firewall or business-grade router

  • Use load balancing or failover setups to make Starlink a secondary connection

  • Disable the built-in Wi-Fi if using your own access points (managed networks, mesh, etc.)

This provides better control over VLANs, VPN passthrough, and device management.

6. Test Performance and Monitor Stability

Once installed:

  • Allow 24–48 hours for the system to fully calibrate

  • Use the Starlink app or a site like speedtest.net to verify speeds

  • Test latency-sensitive tools like VoIP or Teams to check for call stability

  • Monitor dropouts or signal loss, and reposition if needed
