How to Set Up Microsoft 365 Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on First Login

Created by Trevor S, Modified on Fri, 16 May at 2:25 PM by Trevor S

When signing in to Microsoft 365 for the first time, you may be prompted to complete two steps:

  1. Change your password (if your account is newly created or has recently been reset).

  2. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using the Microsoft Authenticator app — this is the only supported method for additional account security.

Follow the steps below to complete your setup.

Step 1: Sign In to Microsoft 365

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com.

  2. Enter your full Microsoft 365 email address and click Next.

  3. Enter your temporary or current password and click Sign In.

Step 2: Change Your Password (If Prompted)

If prompted to change your password:

  1. Enter your current (temporary) password.

  2. Create and confirm a new secure password.

    • Your new password should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

  3. Click Sign In to proceed.

Step 3: Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator

After signing in, you will see a message saying:
"More information required."
Click Next to begin the setup process.

What You'll Need

  • A smartphone with internet access

  • The Microsoft Authenticator app (free to download from your device’s app store)

Installation and Setup

  1. On your phone, install the Microsoft Authenticator app:

  2. On your computer, after clicking Next, a QR code will appear on screen.

  3. On your phone:

    • Open the Authenticator app

    • Tap the + icon or select Add Account

    • Choose Work or School Account

    • Select Scan QR Code

  4. Use your phone to scan the QR code shown on your computer screen.

  5. Once scanned, click Next on your computer.

  6. You’ll receive a test notification on your phone — approve it to complete the setup.

Final Step: MFA Setup Complete

You’ve now successfully enabled Multi-Factor Authentication using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

From now on, when logging into Microsoft 365 from a new device or location, you’ll be asked to approve the sign-in using the app on your phone.

Important Notes

  • Only the Microsoft Authenticator app is supported. Other methods such as SMS or phone call are not available.

  • Keep your phone secure and accessible — you'll need it to log in.

  • If you change phones or lose access to the app, please contact Fusion IT Support as soon as possible so we can reset your MFA setup.
