Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is one of the most effective ways to protect your Microsoft 365 account and business data from unauthorised access. With MFA enabled, even if someone has your password, they won’t be able to log in without a second layer of verification.
What is MFA?
MFA requires two things to access your account:
Something you know – like your Microsoft 365 password
Something you have – like a mobile phone or authentication app
This means that even if your password is compromised, your account remains secure.
How MFA Works
When you sign in to Microsoft 365:
You enter your email address and password
You are then prompted to approve a login request using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device
Once approved, you’re logged in securely
This extra step adds powerful protection against phishing, credential theft, and unauthorised logins.
Why MFA is Important
Stops 99.9% of account breaches, according to Microsoft
Prevents hackers from accessing your account, even if they have your password
Helps protect your emails, documents, Teams chats, and business systems
Supports cyber insurance and compliance requirements
How to Set Up MFA
If you’re a new user, you’ll be prompted to set up MFA when you first log in to Microsoft 365.
