How to Reboot Your Router

If your internet is running slowly, devices aren’t connecting, or your connection keeps dropping, a simple router reboot can often fix the problem. Here’s how to do it properly — and when to contact us instead.

When to Reboot Your Router

Rebooting your router can help resolve:

  • Slow or unstable internet connections

  • Devices unable to connect to Wi-Fi

  • Problems after a power cut

  • Temporary broadband outages

  • Loss of connectivity across the network

How to Safely Reboot Your Router

  1. Find your router – This is usually a small box near your internet entry point or main switch

  2. Unplug the power cable – Don’t press reset (that could wipe settings)

  3. Wait 20–30 seconds – This allows the internal memory to fully clear

  4. Plug the power cable back in – The lights will come on and start blinking

  5. Wait 2–5 minutes – Let the router fully restart and reconnect to your internet provider

Once all lights are back to normal (typically a solid power light and flashing internet light), test your internet connection again.

What Not to Do

  • Do not press the small "reset" button unless advised — this will reset the router to factory settings

  • Don’t reboot too often — if problems are recurring, contact us

  • Don’t pull the internet cable from the wall or damage the power adapter

Still Having Issues?

If a reboot doesn’t solve the problem, the issue may be with your broadband line, internal network, or a connected device. We can help you diagnose it remotely.
