No Sound from Your Computer? Simple Fixes to Try First

Created by Trevor S, Modified on Fri, 16 May at 4:15 PM by Trevor S

If you’re not hearing sound from your PC or laptop, it could be a simple configuration issue. Try these quick checks before contacting support.

1. Check the Volume and Mute Settings

  • Make sure the system volume isn’t muted

  • Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and drag the volume slider up

  • Press the mute key on your keyboard if it has one

2. Verify the Output Device

  • Right-click the speaker icon > Sound settings

  • Ensure the correct output device is selected (e.g. speakers, headphones, HDMI monitor)

  • Try switching between available options

3. Disconnect Headphones or External Audio

  • If headphones are plugged in, your speakers may be disabled

  • Unplug any USB or 3.5mm audio devices and check again

4. Restart Your Device

  • Reboot your computer — this often resolves stuck audio drivers

  • After restarting, test with a YouTube video or sound file

5. Run the Built-In Audio Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound

  • Scroll down and click Troubleshoot

  • Follow the prompts to detect and fix common issues

Still no sound? It could be a driver or hardware issue — we’re happy to take a look.
